Default Read-only not going away

I have a new computer (Vista) which has the files from my old computer (XP).
Unfortunately if I try to save anything to any of the subfolders within
DOCUMENTS, I get a message saying it is read-only, and cannot save it. I
have gone through and did properties and un-checked read-only from all the
folders, but they always revert back to read-only. I have even tried
creating new folders and moving the files into the new folder, but the new
folder remains read-only as well. I just want to be able to save things in
places other than DOCUMENTS.
How do I get past this?
