Default Word 2003 document doesn't work in word 2007

In this document in Word 97-2003 format has check boxes if you double click
on the empty box a check mark will apear in the box. We use this on lots of
different forms. But we recently changed 3 of our office computers to Word
2007 and on these computers when we open this document we are not able to use
the check boxes. we have tried to keep it in compatability mode it doesn't
work and even re-saved the document as a Word 2007 document and this still
didn't change the outcome. Does anyone have any ideas

How have the check boxes been created? If they use the method suggested at
http://www.gmayor.com/Macrobutton.htm are the macros still available?
If they are form fields is the form protected?

The boxes were not created by me. They have just been passed down to me by a
friend. they look like they were created simular to your website suggested
and the forms are not protected. I can delete and remove these check boxes if
I wanted too. But I would prefer to alter the documents in Word 2007 so they
will work again.

thank you for your help
