Default table of contents level display

I have a master document which is composed of subdocuments which are all
designed around a similar template to document processes.

Each subdocument has a title that either uses Heading 1 for a primary
subject, or Heading 2 if the subject is an elaboration of the primary topic.

When I build the table of contents, Word displays my entries as such

Processes................................. 3
Process ................................ 4
Adding a Process ................... 4
Process ............................... 5
Updating the Master Doc........ 5

What I want to display is this:

Processes ................................ 3
Adding a Process.................... 4
Updating the Master Doc......... 5

I dont understand why it is adding the extra line that says Process before
each Heading 2 entry.

Hi Glenn,

If you're using Word's 'Master Document' feature, be warned - they're prone to
terminal corruption. See:
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/Wh...ocsCorrupt.htm
Much safer IMHO to use stand-alone documents based on a common template and
build the TOC via RD fields.

Having said that, there are some useful pointers on Master Documents at:
http://www.techwr-l.com/techwhirl/ma...masterdocs.doc

As for the repeated 'Process' item in your TOC, that looks like a repeated
heading in one of the source documents (perhaps a style that's been applied to
something in the document's header).

Cheers
