Default Deleting a field

My document contains several sections due to the need for different headers.
However, I seem to have inserted a field in front of the line that separates
the main document and the footnotes. This has been applied to all of the
pages that have footnotes. The field coincides with the page number. I can
not select it or click on it to edit it. How do I get rid of this because it
appears when I print the document. Here is what it looks like:

(text of page 3)

3--------------------------
footnotes...

I want to get rid of the number three in front of the divisor line. It has a
gray background.

Urgent help needed!! Thank you!!

How do you know it's a field? If you press Alt+F9, does the number get
replaced by something in field braces {}?

In any case, have you checked to see if the number might be in the
header/footer layer. What happens if you double-click it? Does it become
accessible if you choose View - Headers and Footers and look in the header
or footer?

If you still can't resolve it, and the document isn't proprietary, you can
email it to me and I'll take a whack at figuring out where it's coming from.
You can send to problem(at)thetysons.org, replacing (a) with @.

In Normal View, Select View Footnotes from the Menu

In the dropdown at the top of the Footnotes Pane, select Footnotes Separator

If there is a field you will be able to delete it there.

Enjoy,
Tony

Because the Footnote Separator style is based on Normal, it is very
sensitive to changes in the formatting of Normal. Have you applied numbering
to Normal style (intentionally or inadvertently)? Try this:

1. Switch to Normal view.

2. View | Footnotes.

3. In the footnote pane, click the arrow beside the dropdown list box and
select Footnote Separator.

4. Click Reset. If that doesn't help, try Ctrl+Q. If that still doesn't
help, right-click, choose Paragraph or Bullets and Numbering and remove any
undesired formatting.

It's also possible that the separator has acquired a different style (I've
seen this happen, though I have no idea how); right-click and choose
Style... and make sure that Normal is the style applied.
