Are you saving in a backwards-compatible format? When Word 2007 ships, there
will be converters available, but for now you have to save in Word 97-2003
format.

In addition to Suzanne's excellent answer, please remember that it's really
bad work practice to require someone to have to download a converter just so
you don't have to do a Save As. Some people can't download anything on their
systems due to the administrator's rules. Others just won't download it.

Most people would save the document before attempting to close it, but no
matter how you do it, the Save As dialog opens. You then get to choose a
file type at the same time that you choose a filename. I don't have the beta
installed, so I don't know how much the dialog in Word 2007 may differ from
the one in previous versions, but there should be a dropdown box labeled
"Save as type" or something similar.
