Default savingchanges on exiting

For some time now, I have noticed that if I don't save changes as I work on a
document, but accept the "yes" button when asked if I want to save my changes
on exiting, Word does NOT save the changes! How can I correct this?

Attend to the issue Jezebel has raised - then also see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm - and if you have
Acrobat 7 - see the last part of
