require I-MR, X-R, X-S with overbar over the characters MR and .
I have found the equation editor but it seems to not want to let me put the
whole line in I-MR, X-R, X-S in one go with overbars on MR and X and X. also the ones I have created when I cut and paste to OneNote will not stay on one line but go I-MR , X-R , X-S |

It's hard to really understand what you want, but it seems like you want an overbar over more than one character. If so, you need to be using the overbar template and not the overbar embellishment. The items on the embellishments palette (third from the left on the top row of palettes) only apply to the last character typed, and can never be applied to more than one character. The "overbar and underbar templates" palette (6th from the left on the second row) can be used to apply these bars, etc., to more than one character.
