The *definition* of "front matter" is "introduction, contents, title page
and so forth." Page numbers are a section property. To omit page numbers (aside from the special case of omitting them on the first page of a section by using the "Different first page" setting and leaving the First Page Header/Footer blank), you must insert a section break between the pages you don't want numbered (or on which you don't want a number to appear) and the pages you want numbered. You can then unlink the header(s)/footer(s) in Section 2 from the one(s) in Section 1 and leave the one(s) in Section 1 empty. Whenever you select "This point forward" in Page Setup, Word inserts a section break for you. -- Suzanne S. "James Inman" wrote in message ... No that link has nothing to do with just deleteing simple single page numbers. If you have a single document and you don't want numbers on the first few pages there needs to be a simple way to just delete those numbers. Most books or documents don't have all kinds of complex front matter. (just and introduction, contents, title page and so forth) The only thing I found on that link that helped was Step 4: Fine-tuning number placement and Numbering the front matter. "On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for €śDifferent first page.€ť Youll see that you now have a separate First Page Header and First Page Footer. You can leave them empty, and there will be no page number on the first page." Then I figured out on my own that you need to click below that on Layout tab: This Point Forward. I just did the same thing on each page. But you have to make sure you have no section breaks or manuel page breaks before the page you want the numbers to start on. For complex documents you'll need a graduate degree in computer science to understand page numbering. Good luck everyone. It's just annoying. "Suzanne S. "James Inman" wrote in message ... This whole page numbering and section break thing is retarded. It's not user friendly at all. I JUST WANT TO DELETE A FEW PAGE NUMBERS AT THE FRONT OF MY BOOK! Just create a program that lets you click on the page number and delete it. AND LET THE PAGE NUMBERS START ON THE PAGE THAT I WANT WITHOUT ALL THIS SECTION BREAK CRAP! Also the page number format box NEEDS MORE OPTIONS! Here's an idea... "Start page numbering from here down" AND DON'T MAKE IT PUT PAGE NUMBERS ON THE WHOLE DOCUMENT. I've been to numerous forums and ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE ARE FRUSTRATED WITH THIS! |
