Default Access privilege for Word file

I have several Word documents that I've created and saved on my home
computer. Now when I try to open the files some do open as expected but
others deny me access with the message: "Word cannot open document. User does
not have access privileges." I'm not in the habit of protecting my files with
passwords or anything like that. Did I do something by accident to restrict
access? How do I open the files?

My system runs Windows XP and MS Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003
