I our shared environment, we are using Word Viewer to grant view only access
to files on a Terminal Services server. When a logged on user attempts to
open a word document, they are prompted to either open the file or save the
file. When choosing Open, Word Viewer starts to launch, but then stops and
asks them where they would like to save the file. My question is, Where is
it wanting to save this file, and Why does it want to save the file since it
is view only? Is there a temporary file created for the word viewer, and if
so, where does it want to create it? A person with Administrator rights has
no problem.

Do these users also have MS Word installed?

No, not always. Dumb terminals are about half our environment.
I should note that we are using Word Viewer on the server open the file for
viewing only. We do not want them to modify the file.

Hmmm. Can you open the same files in Wordpad?
When the viewer or Word opens the document it creates
temp files, usually in the %temp% folder. Do the users
have a folder that the app can write to?

I will check on the wordpad program. The user does not have any writes to
any area on the server the documents are stored on. Does the Word Viewer
save a temp file when you open a document with it?
