Can someone advise me how to create a table of contents on existing document
and how to update it after changing the body.

Thanks,

Use heading styles for your headings that you want in your table of
contents. Automatically generate the table of contents. See

Default Table of contents

Many thanks for who responded and now I can create the TOC but there are a
couple of points that cannot be figured out.

1. When I update entire table, the whole table returns to original
format - big font, bold font any where. I need to reformat the table again.
How can I just update the added headings and page numbers.

2. My headings have different formats but when I use heading 1 or 2 that
has its own formatting, my original formats for the headings are changed.
Can I just mark the headings but do not apply any formatting to the
headings.

3. How can I do indents in the table of contents?

Your further advice is appreciated.

Scott

It sounds like you have directly formatted the table - you need to change
the TOC styles instead.

Or possibly what is happening is that you have direct font formatting on
your Headings and that is coming through (see next point).

2. My headings have different formats but when I use heading 1 or 2

Modify the Heading styles to give you the formatting you need for your
headings.

3. How can I do indents in the table of contents?

Set the indents in the TOC styles.

Default Table of contents

Thanks for all responded with useful information. Most of problems have
been resolved. However, I still have one issue in the table that I cannot
locate the cause of the problem.

Purpose..................................3
Scope3
Part 1......................................4

The Scope3 is displayed incorrectly. I need to put a period after Scope and
it displays correctly. However, once updated, the problem resumes again.
Can someone have any cure to it.

Thanks,

Scott

Most likely something to do with where a tab stop (or hanging indent) is in
the style. There's evidently a tab stop just to the right of the end of
"Scope," which is too short to bump your tab character to the right-margin
tab stop. If you didn't insert this tab stop yourself, see
