Default Can no longer underline

I can no longer underline in Word using either Ctrl+U or the toolbar. Is the
trouble with Word, my computer or my keyboard?

Thanks for all of your help--past, present and, of course---future!

Bizarre! Are you sure you haven't accidentally enabled Draft Fonts? Can you
assign Italics (Ctrl+I) or Bold (Ctrl+B)?

To troubleshoot, you could check what's assigned to the shortcut, and to the
toolbar button.

You do that by first using the built-in command
"ToolsCustomizeKeyboardShortcut":
Press and hold Ctrl, press and hold Alt, then press "+" on the numeric
keypad at the right of your keyboard.

The cursor should now look like a clover leaf ("control symbol").

With that cursor, click on the underline button on the formatting toolbar.

Or use the shortcut for "underline" (Ctrl+U).

In both cases, the "Customize keyboard" dialog should pop up.
And it should have "Underlined" as the command.

If you see something else there (say a macro), you've found the culprit.

Regards,
Klaus

Hi, Terry:

Thanks so much for your reply!

I can italicize and bold words, but no underline. As to enabling Draft
Fonts, I'm not familiar with that feature, Terry. How would one go about
doing that?

Obvious, but just for clarification :-)...

Is it possible that you're using a particularly low Zoom percentage? If so,
the underline may be there but is simply too fine to be displayed. Does the
toolbar button appear to remain engaged or is the formatting indicated as
actually being applied?

What happens if you zoom to 100% or Page Width?

Is underlining visible in Print Preview?

One more dumb question: Is it possible that the color for Underline has been
modified in the Font Formatting dialog?

Thanks so much for your reply, Klaus! Your internet articles on Microsoft
Word have contributed so much to my word processing career.

The ToolsCustomizeKeyboard indicates that Ctrl+U is assigned to underline.

I also learned through your reply what the dickens that little clover was
that from time to time has appeared mysteriously! And that's just one of the
things I've learned from you, Klaus! Thanks again!

Hi

It cannot be the drafts font option because neither Bold, Italics or other
formatting would show up as such - not just underlines. Do the underlines
(that you cannot see) actually print?

What happens if you start in Safe Mode? From Start | Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Can you underline now in Safe Mode?

And Bob's suggestions about font colour too?

Terry
