Default track hyperlinked files in word 2000

hi--i'm trying to establish a convenient way of managing documents in my
company's quality management system. all documents are typed in word, and i
hyperlinked references throughout all of the documents. (i heard that word
2003 had a fairly useful document management feature, and that word 2000 had
some usefulness also.)

i wanted to create a cross reference system that would allow for easy
tracking of changes--so if one document is changed, all the other documents
that refer to that initial document are readily traceable (without having to
visually search for those references). however, although the hyperlinks that
i inserted are great to an extent, it creates a new problem: broken links,
plus i'm sure many others that i'm yet unaware of.

is there a way to make a list of broken links? or to prevent any changes
being made that would cause the link to break? (is this too complicated?)

i also put in keywords in the properties of all the documents within this
system, so the potential is there to search via those keywords.

does anyone have any ideas or great suggestions? or do i need to recommend
different software?

thanks in advance
