Default missing main dictionary

I have a strange problem in word 2000. Word will identify mispelled words,
but when I do a spell check, no suggestions appear. I have tried checking
and unchecking the 'use main dictionary' box to no success. Any ideas on
what is wrong or how to fix? Can the main dictionary file be replaced? If
so, what is it called and where is it located?

In Word 2002 and 2003, you can click on Tools | Options | Spelling &
Grammar | check the "Always suggest corrections" box | OK. Possibly
there is a similar setting in Word 2000?
