please help from this morning every time i open a word document it brings up
the page with dotted line inside like a text outline but i cannot find how to
get rid of this or why it has suddenly appreared? can anyone help me our IT
dept here seem at a loss!!!

I believe you are describing text boundaries. In Word 2007, clear the "Show
text boundaries" option in Office button | Word Options, Advanced category
(under "Show document content").

If you are using Word 97-2003, look in Tools | Options (I believe it is
found on the View tab).

Thanks Stefan, that worked for me. I'd add that even with this help it is possible to have a hard time finding the "Advanced" options. For any similarly mentally challenged readers, it's not in the list of options, but a blue rectangle at bottom of the window in the frame area. It's plainly visible, but I kept looking at the vertical list of options and didn't notice it until going back to that menu for the third time.
I had a patient who is a network engineer for a large company try to get rid of this line for me and he gave up after about fifteen minutes of opening and reopening all the menus.
