Default Program hangs on "file setup" or "file>print"

I'm running OFFICE 2003 on a W2K platform, using a WIFI connection on a home
intranet. Printer (Canon S600 is attached to a different computer. Recently,
there has been a 35-45 second delay when trying to bring up "file setup" . On
subsequent attempts the delay is 10-15 seconds. Similar problem with "file
print". This does not happen when printer is changed to another remote
printer, when accessing printer from other software, or when accessing
printer from computer to which it is hard wired or another computer using
WIFI connection to intranet. During delay period, "spoolsrv.exe" is using
most of system CPU (~80%)

I ran repair option on Installation disk - no effect; uninstallede printer
on computer having problem and reinstalled printer - no improvement.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You need to install the driver for this printer locally.

Thank you for the suggestion. When I try to install printer driver, the
"wizard" tells me it will be installed from the network computer hard wired
to the printer. After this has been done, the problem remains. I cannot
install a driver on the WIFI laptop "locally" because there is no printer
attached. I have downloaded the driver from Canon's web site but when I try
to upgrade it onto the network computer, I am told it has an older date than
already present.

Am I missing something?

Thank you

My understanding is that you should be able to install the driver even if
there is no printer physically attached to the computer. Word needs to have
access to a printer driver (*any* printer driver) in order to lay out pages.

FYI, your suggestion didn't work as installing driver locally didn't allow
WORD to commujnicate over network. Solution required uninstalling printer
drivers on both WIFI laptop and hard-wired desktop and then adding printer
(and reinstalling driver) on hard-wired computer. Finally, when I added
printer to laptop, the driver on the desktop was installed on the laptop and,
at last, problem is solved.
Your suggestion did help in that it foced me to focus on the printer
driver as theculprit! Manuy thanks!
