Default Auto Saving in Word?

Upon closing a file, sometimes, Word will prompt you to save changes when no
changes have been made. Other times it just closes. Is there a reason?

In the ones where you get the prompt, fields were updated. (Even though
there is no change in what is displayed, Word counts this as a change.)
