Default Converting Word Perfect document using an old version of Word

I am currently running Microsoft Word 98 on an old computer and need to
convert documents made in Windows XP 2000 Word Perfect into Word documents.
My Word 98 shuts down as soon as I try to convert a Word Perfect document ---
a dialogue box pops up which says "This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down". Does this mean I need to download a newer
version of Word? If so, where can I find these downloads?

Word 98 is a Macintosh program, are you running on a Mac?

Windows XP 2000 Word Perfect?
Windows XP = Windows 2002

Try saving in Word Perfect to an .rtf file format and try opening that in
Word. Otherwise, save to WP 5.1 for DOS format and open in Word.

Do _not_ use Word to read from or write to a floppy disk file.
