Default Auto update for text/headings in different pages.

Here is my predicament.

I'm producing a document that my client wants the contents list items
(headings/text etc) to change if they were to change the heading elsewhere in
the document.

I have been looking into indexing and cross reference and am struggling.
In a nut shell, if you type something somewhere it changes elsewhere in the
document, contents list, chapters etc.

Any and all support is much appreciated.
