Default The back space arrow key does not highlighted text

When I highlight text and press the back space key the cursor goes to the
start of the text and the text is no longer highlighted and does not delete.
When I highlight text and try to replace it by pasting text over it, the
pasted text is added to rather than replacing the highlighted text.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
