Default symbols changed in word 2003

Issue:
I've created a word document in word 97, which contains various symbols.
When I open that same document using Word 2003, some of the symbols either
reverse or completely change.

Anyone else run into this?

Word 97 was base on codepages, Word 2004 is based on Unicode. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode for details.

According to microsoft, word 97 was the first to support unicode..so, could
this be ruled out?
