Default why does all text turn into squares when changing fonts

In word, once I have assigned a font, and want to change it, all the typed
text becomes a bunch of square and rectangular boxes. When changed to the
original font, it shows the text again.
It just started doing this, and as far as I know, I haven't changed any
settings to only display one font.
