Word is incredibly slow to open up large documents - on network and when copied to local machine ?
Hi all,
I have a number of large documents that we are trying to open, and they are taking an incredibly long time to open fully. I get the first few pages quickly, but then you see the pages down the bottom left increment very slowly. If I do a ctrl-end it repaginates very quickly and gets to the last page fast. Any ideas what could be causing this ? Office2K on both XP and Win2K machines. cheers, Adam |

Just to clarify please: these documents are slow even when you have copied them to your local HDD and opened them from there? Would clarify how large is large? Are they complex - loads of bookmarks/cross references, graphic objects or very long tables for instance? How much RAM do you have in your computers? -- Terry Farrell - Word MVP http://word.mvps.org/ "acs68" wrote in message ... : Hi all, : : I have a number of large documents that we are trying to open, and they are : taking an incredibly long time to open fully. Hi,
yes , they are slow from hdd as well as the network The document is about 1000 pages long. They are mostly letters that are pasted into the document over a month. We have one large correspondence file that we add each letter to as they are typed. I wouldn't imagine they are very complex docs at all. Converting to rtf and opening as such seems to fix the problem. Any ideas ? cheers, Adam "TF" terryfarrell%40%6d%73%6e%2ecom wrote in message ... If opening in RTF and then converting back to a DOC resolves the problem,
then they have become corrupt. Switching to RTF and back is one way that often removes corruptions. -- Terry Farrell - Word MVP http://word.mvps.org/ "acs68" wrote in message ... : Hi, : : yes , they are slow from hdd as well as the network : : The document is about 1000 pages long. : : They are mostly letters that are pasted into the document over a month.
