Default Word 2000 support and updates

Like many on here, I am using Word 2000 on W98SE, which I'm very happy
with. I presume that on the same lines as the W98 policy, Microsoft
will eventually withdraw any support for Word 2000. What I want to do
is to get now the various updates for Word 2000 (which are of coures
already applied to mine) and dowload and save them as files on eg memory
stick. Then if in the future I ever need to replace/reformat my hard
disk, and restore from my (old) Word 2000 CDs, I can then apply the
updates. Can anyone help with a blow-by-blow account for this newbie, on

1) how to download the updates without actually aplpplying them (as they
are already applied to the current files.

And then 2) how to actually apply them to a newly copied over (old) CD
if/when the time ever comes.

Also, a little request. Could posters always say (preferably in the
title) what version of Word they are referring to?

TIA.

Default Word 2000 support and updates

You're correct about the support situation. It's described at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...-us;lifeOffice.

It isn't particularly easy to collect and download the updates, but
it's possible.

Go to the Office Update page, most easily by going into Word and
clicking Help Office On the Web, then clicking Check for Updates on
two consecutive web pages.

The update checker will confirm that your Office is already fully
patched, or offer you the latest. In the left column, click "Show
already installed Office updates". You'll get a long list of updates.
Under each one, click the link for "Show description"; in the
description, click the link for "More information". A second browser
window will open to the download page for that update.

For each one, first make a note of its release date, the KB article
number that describes the update, and the security bulletin number if
any. By checking these articles, you can find out which updates
include other updates. For example, Office 2000 Service Pack 3
includes all previous service packs. When you know that you need an
update, click the Download button on its page and save the file to
your hard drive. Later you can transfer it to a memory stick or burn
it to a CD.

Each of these files is an executable (.exe). After you install the
base release from the original CD, select each update in release-date
order and double-click its icon in Windows Explorer to apply it.

Default Word 2000 support and updates

Dear Jay

Thank you very much. AT LAST someone has replied comprehensively explaining
just what to do. The key is that they are *.exe files. I presume the
procedure you outlined is the reason you say 'It isn't particularly easy'. I

think that what you describe should be easy enough but of course lengthy and
tedious. Or is there another problem?

This question is similar to one I have been asking re W98 in that newsgroup,
and have never got a reply that reflects exactly what I am trying to do. Do
you think the same procedure will work for the O/S updates (W98 is due to be
officially dropped soon)?

Finally, OT OT: I think my IE6 is corrupted. Where can I download another? I

am also looking for info re my (deliberately) old version of Netscape. Where

would I find that?

Thanks all and sorry for the OT. Desperate for answers and weeks of postings
have falied until Jay winged his/her way in my direction.

BTW this is a *great* newsgroup.

Default Word 2000 support and updates

I meant that it isn't particularly easy because you have to do a lot
of reading and clicking in different web pages to collect the dozen or
so update files, and it isn't always clear whether a particular one is
needed or is already included in another update. There isn't one place
you can go for a definitive list, and you can't just check a series of
boxes and click a single "download all this stuff" button.

I believe you'll find a similar situation on the Windows Update site
for Windows 98, but I don't use that version any more so I can't just
go for a look (which is what I did for Word 2000).

I have no idea what you need for an old Netscape version; I never used
Netscape much, but I'm a fan of Firefox. It looks like you can
download any of the old versions from
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive.jsp.

I don't think you can uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer the
way you can with other misbehaving programs, because it has
interdependencies with many parts of Windows. I'm not sure about
Windows 98, but in XP you can go into Add/Remove Programs, click
Add/Remove Windows Components, and uncheck IE, but all that does is
remove the desktop icon and the Start menu item for it (as required by
the antitrust settlement). You can download assorted updates from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/B...n&categoryid=6
but I don't think there's a base installation package there.
