Default Add the Periodic Table of Elements to the: Insert/ Symbols.

It would be nice to have the Peridic Table of Elements in the Insert/ Symbols
tab. For example O2 (oxygen) looks rather unprofessional in reports. It
would be nice to make it look correct.

After you type a chemical formula such as O2, select the number and
press Ctrl and the = key. That's the shortcut for the Subscript
character format (you could also apply it through the Format Font
dialog, but that would take longer). If you use that formula a lot,
make an AutoText entry or an AutoCorrect entry for it.

The Insert Symbol dialog is something different -- it only gives you
access to individual characters that are part of a font. The subscript
isn't a specific character in a font, it's a formatting applied to a
regular character.

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Genera...tSpecChars.htm for
background about the Symbol dialog.

Although "large" fonts such as Arial Unicode MS do include Superscript and
Subscript numerals in the character subset of that name.
