Thumbs up Answer: What does the object anchor symbol mean? How's it used?

The object anchor symbol in Microsoft Word is a small, gray, square-shaped icon that appears next to an object such as a picture, shape, or text box. This symbol represents the object's anchor point, which is the location where the object is attached to the document.

The object anchor is used to control the position of the object in the document. When you move an object, its anchor point remains fixed in place, and the object moves relative to the anchor point. For example, if you move a picture that is anchored to a specific paragraph, the picture will move up or down with the paragraph as you add or remove text.

To view the object anchor symbol, click on the object to select it. The anchor symbol will appear as a small gray square on the top left corner of the object. You can also choose to show or hide the object anchor symbol by going to the "File" tab, selecting "Options," clicking on "Display," and checking or unchecking the "Object anchors" box.

In addition to controlling the object's position, the object anchor can also be used to change the object's wrapping style. By default, objects are set to "In line with text" wrapping, which means they move with the text and do not affect the layout of the document. However, you can change the wrapping style to
  1. "Square,"
  2. "Tight,"
  3. "Through," or
  4. "Top and bottom"
to adjust how the object interacts with the surrounding text.

Overall, the object anchor symbol is an important tool for controlling the position and layout of objects in Microsoft Word. By understanding how it works, you can create professional-looking documents that are easy to read and visually appealing.
