I have fonts in my font folder that don't show up in programs
I have Times New Roman fonts bold, italic in my font folder but they don't
show up in any of my programs like word and quark |

I have fonts in my font folder that don't show up in programs

And if you select some text in that font and make it italic, the letter shapes change -- for example, a regular letter a has a loop below and a hook above, while an italic a has only the loop, and other letters such as f and g have noticeably different shapes. The difference between regular and bold isn't so noticeable, but the stroke thicknesses vary differently to keep the font readable. That means Word is really using the separate font files when you apply the formatting, although for simplicity it only shows one "Times New Roman" entry in the font list. If it was ignoring the separate files, all the letter shapes would stay the same and just be slanted or thickened. |

No, Graham, in this instance I think Jay's got it right. It wasn't the fonts
per se that the OP was missing but the bold, italic, and bold italic variants, which are never displayed. -- Suzanne S.
