Default Word 2003 stays in memory

I'm having a problem with word staying in memory sometimes after I close it.
I can popup Windows Task manager and see Word in there sometimes after I
exit, and it seems to slow down other functions on the internet like email
and surfing. I can then end the process, but sometimes it creeps back into
memory in various sizes. I am running Panda Antivirus Interent Security, and
MS Spyware.

Do you use Word as your email editor? -- in which case, working with Outlook
will run Word in the background. There are other apps that use Word in that
way also. Run your computer with Task Manager visible, and watch what's
triggering Word to start ... it can't start of its own accord.

That's it exactly - thanks for the tip. I had noticed when I terminated
word that funny things would happen to Outlook, but never linked the two.
