Default Can I get an "a" in handwriting lowercase style?

I want to do some writing/reading practice with my young son but am not happy
with the typewriter-style lettering. Am I able to get an "a" as per
handwriting lower case?

Try the Lucida Handwriting font.

I don't think Lucida Handwriting (as suggested) is going to be what you
want. There are fonts (Avant Garde, for example) that have the kind of
lowercase a I think you're looking for, but most are not supplied with
Windows or Office. Some that are are Berlin Sans (Office 2003, Publisher
2000), Century Gothic (a variety of Office versions), and Tw Cen MT (Office
2003 and others). You might also be interested in Bradley Hand and Comic
Sans,

You might also want to look into this:

Same for cursive (also using D'Nealian system):
