Default Add columns to TOC?

Using 2000 ...

Can you add information (columns) to a TOC and still have it be updatable?

The TOC would start with a column that shows the reference number for the
electronic version of the file. Next column would be a normal TOC. The last
column would show the date that TOC entry was last updated (manually entered).

The document is a collection of guidelines. Each guideline name will be the
TOC entry (plus a few misc. entries at the beginning).

Thanks for any help!!
