cross references turn into normal text
I have the following problem: some of my cross references (used mainly to refer to numbered headings in a 100 page document) end up turning into normal text. this means I can no longer update them! what is going on here? can anyone explain how to prevent this in the future? thanks, Chris, trying to finish his masters thesis -- switzerland chris |

Cross-references are actually Ref fields. What is shown if you press
Alt+F9? If you see a REF field, similar to { REF _Ref117320401 \h }, then the cross-reference is definitely still there. The cross-reference field could be locked. To unlock it, place the cursor inside it and press Ctrl+Shift+F11. On the other hand, if the field has been unlinked (that is, converted to text), which can be done by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9, you have to reinsert it. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "switzerland chris" wrote in message on.com...
