Default Opening a document saved in word2007 as .doc in word2003

Hi,
I created a document in word2007 and saved it as a .doc (97 - 2003) file. I
am now on a different computer using vista and I want to open my .doc file in
word 2003. But when I open it, the file conversion diaglog opens asking me to
select the encoding that makes my file readble. I have the appropriate
software to make .docx files compatible with word 2003 but this should not be
needed. Why can I not open my .doc file (saved in word 2007) in word2003?
