Default Using new shortcut on desktop, open Word by using File, New, Word

I have changed Word 2007 to save in the Work 97-2003 format (.doc) and also
changed the default font setting. These settings are working correctly with
the exception of when I open a new document in the following manner:

Double-click a new desktop shortcut
Click File
Click New
Click Microsoft Office Word Document

These documents open using the '07 format (.docx) and using the factory
settings.

Where is this document being stored so I can change it in that location also?

You're not the first one to stumble over this thing. I haven't yet found
a documentation in the KB for it (but have not taken a look lately :-)).
Word is in fact not creating a new document based on your Normal.dotm
when you create it from the OS, but creates a zero length file which is
created subsequently with factory defaults.

We've received the following registry fix, where you need to create a
new document (say, based directly on your Normal.dotm), and copy it to a
folder specified in the registry. See instructions below (search first
or ask back if you've never before edited your registry!).

ACTIONS:
=========
The way to perform this is following the next steps:

1st) In the registry under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, we have to find find
".docx" extension.

2nd) Expand that node and expand the "Word.Document.12" node.

3rd) Then find "ShellNew". Note that it has a key called "NullFile", a
REG_SZ, that makes Word create the zero-byte document.

4th) We proceed to rename that item (to xNullFile for instance)

5th) Then next to it in the same node, add a new key called Filename,
also a REG_SZ, and provide as data a full path to a document that can be
copied each time . then the Right-Click-New scenario happens.

After performing these actions our registry appears like this after our
trial and verification:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx\Word.Document.12\ShellNew]
"xNullFile"=""
"Filename"="C:\\Users\\Machine\\Desktop\\starter.d ocx"

Now each time the user does Right-Click and "New Word Document" in the
File System (Windows Shell), that file is copied.

Anything in that "starter" file will be in the new document.

Our recommendation is that it would be a blank document based on
Normal.dotm.

Hi Beach Lover,

I'm assuming the 'File' menu you're referring to would be that in Windows Explorer, which would also be the Windows Shell menu you
access when you right click in Windows Explorer to create a new Word document then double click that, for Word 2007 the 'new' file
is created using internal to the program defaults.

If you prefer to have the New Microsoft Word document choice in Windows Explorer right click menu create a legacy Word97-2003 .doc
file rather than a zero byte .docx one you may want to apply the steps in this article.
