Default Document changes to read-only while being used

in both Word and Excel once a document has been open for a few minutes and
changes made it automatically switches itself to read-only so you then have
to save it as a copy. No-one else is in the document and it shouldnt be set
to read only at all - just switches itself half way through. any suggestions?
