I think my problem before was that I had stray spaces in the 'replace with' box. Anyway I am using first replace ^p with (space) and then replace {2,} with (space) This is doing a great job on the text - giving me long lines and no multiple spaces - all that remains is to re-insert the paragraph breaks = easy peasy.
