Default My endnotes skipped numbers

My endnotes skipped numbering from no. 20 to no. 22 (there is no number 21)
How do I fix this problem? I am using windows Xp /Word 2000

Display Hidden text to make sure the footnote number is not hidden. If that
doesn't turn anything up, set the Browse Object to Footnote and, starting
from footnote 20, click Next Footnote browse to where footnote 21 must be.
Select some text on either side of this position and Delete.
