Default Template download from Microsoft

I downloaded a fax cover sheet template from Microsoft. I customized the
template with my personal information, e-mailed it to my boss, customized the
template with his personal information while sitting at his PC, and now, the
files are linked. I can't make a change to my file that doesn't effect his
file. How do I unlink these two seemingly independent documents? Thanks.

What you are describing makes no sense. Describe the linkage between your
system and your boss' system. Networked? Sharing a user templates folder?

For more on the different kinds of templates, tabs on the file new dialog,
and locations of templates folders see

I think what happened here is you created two instances of the same template.
Your boss has to have his own copy of the .dot file. Every time you
double-click on a .dot file, it creates a .doc instance of that template
which is linked back to the .dot
