Default I cannot type various unicode characters???? (Nabla)

I can't type certain unicode characters and don't know why. I need to type
mathematical operators for the most part, I can for example input 2206, ˆ† but
not 2207 (note in MS word). It does appear in my browser but it seems to
work in my browser only. If I try to input this in any other app. I get the
null character []. I installed the Unicode System font which should have the
character and don't know what to do at this point. Currently my input method
is US-International and the active code is 437
