Default extend horizontal ruler to edge of paper

For some reason, I cannot extend the top(horizontal) ruler to the extreme
right hand edge of the paper. This results in the text being compressed to a
size smaller than desired.

Sounds like your margins need to be changed?

Thanks Anne, but I have already tried that. The actual far (right) edge of
the ruler is "indented" inside the paper border by a few centimetres. On
normal documents it is flush with the edge.

In that case (assuming this is Word 2002 or 2003), Word is extending the
margin to allow for the "balloons."
