Default Only want highlighted section reformatted

I have WordXP. I highlight a section and change the formatting with either
keyboard shortcuts or using hte menus, but not with hte button bar, and the
entire document takes on the changed format. I have to make a change and
hit UNDO every time. It seems to be making changes to the style. This is
driving me NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can I limit changes to ONLY what I
highlight? Thanks
