Default Restore Form Field in Customize Outline Number List

One of my coworkers accidentally deleted one of the form fields in the
Customize Outline Numbered List -- Number Format text box, and I can't
figure out how to restore it. To elaborate, on Level 3, I started with
1.1.1, where represents a form field (auto-increment) for the
purpose of this post.

Now, the Level 3 Number Format is 1.1.1, and I cannot figure out how to
restore it. I tried to Reset the number field and start over, but isn't
there a better way than having to delete all the styles?

Thanks,
Matthew Pfluger

You don't have to delete everything in the "Number style" box if you know
which part is causing trouble. From your description, it should be
sufficient to delete the last number (which appears to have been typed in),
and reinsert it via the "Number format" box.

However, since you often cannot tell the difference between previous and
current level numbers (for example, this is the case with the "1, 1.1,
1.1.1" number format), it is usually easier to delete all numbers and
recreate them, whenever you run into trouble.

No matter what you decide to do, the general idea is the following: Add the
current level number by selecting it in the "Number style" box, and add
previous levels by selecting them in the list box for previous levels.

This is the part that I'm stuck on. I delete the "1.", but how do I
reinsert a form field in the Number format box?

Thanks,

I assumed that by "form field" you were referring to the numbers with grey
backgrounds in the "Number format" box? These numbers represent the
numbering for the selected numbering level as well as numbering inserted
from previous levels, and, as I wrote, you insert them into the "Number
format" box via the "Number style" and the "Prevous level number" box.

Default Restore Form Field in Customize Outline Number List

I apologize for not understanding the method exactly. The userform doesn't
make the "button clicking" sequence very clear...

Yes, your are correct in assuming that I wanted the gray box around the 1.

For those who are interested, here's how I finally solved the problem. To
recreate the correct auto-number sequence, I first deleted everything in the
"Number Format" text box. I then chose "Level 1" from the "Previous Level
Number" dropdown. This inserts a 1 with a gray box, a link to the first
level number. Next, I typed a period. I did the same thing for Level 2.

Finally, I selected "1, 2, 3, ..." from the "Number Style" dropdown. This
inserts a field (a 1 with a gray box) for the current level. Thus, my final
sequence is:
Level 1.Level 2.Level 3

Thanks to Stefan for pointing me in the right direction. I'm going to go
read up on Styles and Outline Numbering.

You've described the step-by-step procedure very clearly, I think. :-)

For more information on the Customize Outline Numbered dialog box, see
