Default tab doesn't work to change list levels

When I am typing a multilevel bulleted or numbered list, the TAB and
SHIFT+TAB doesn't work to go back and forth between different levels.
Pressing either of these commands [TAB or SHIFT+TAB], the bullet remains at
the same level as the one above it and the command merely indents the text at
that bullet.
Instead, now I have to click on Increase Indent or Decrease Indent to be
able to change levels. Is there a setting that I need to turn off/on to make
this change?

It would have been much easier to answer your question if you had
mentioned which version of Word you have.

In Word 97 and 2000, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check
the "Tabs and backspace set left indent" box | OK.

In Word 2002 and 2003, click on Tools | AutoCorrect Options |
AutoFormat As You Type tab | check the "Set left- and
first-indent with tabs and backspaces" box | OK.

In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Proofing |
AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type tab | check the "Set
left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces" box | OK.
