Word 2002 suddently opens all docs in print layout
I edit client docs (scientific). These are uploaded to my hard drive, then
downloaded to Word. Up to now, no problem. The doc looked like a doc, margins, and all, plus page counter. I just clicked TRK and went to work. Suddenly, all docs opened in print layout, despite using \a and numerous other troubleshooting devices. Changing to normal, lower horizontal bar shows, but pages don't move with the scroll; in fact, page breaks show instead. This isn't normal. And, yes, I renamed normal.dot -- didn't help. Anyone had a similar occurrence? Thanks. |

Word 2002 suddently opens all docs in print layout
I'm confused by your description, and I suspect so are you. Some things that
may help: 1. Normal view shows continuous text on a solid window in your chosen window color, interrupted by dotted lines showing page breaks. 2. Print Layout view shows the entire page against a gray background; if you have suppressed white space, you will get a continuous document with lines where the headers and footers should be (see http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/WhiteSpace.htm). 3. Documents are displayed in the view in which they are saved (mostly); the "white space" setting is an exception; see WD2002: Rules for Hide white space between pages at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297564 4. The status bar should be displayed in all views if you have it checked on the View tab of Tools | Options. I don't understand what you mean about pages not moving with the scroll. -- Suzanne S. Followup to Ms. Barnhill:
1. My Word 2002 runs on XP Home. Until a few days ago, ALL docs opened in the way they were saved; suddenly all docs DO NOT open in the way they were saved; they ALL (including my own previous correspondence, resumes, etc.) open IN PRINT VIEW. 2. Page numbers on the horizontal bar, say 1/9, 2/9, 3/9, etc. DO NOT MOVE as the doc is scrolled. Page 1 and 1/9, for example, stay Page 1 and 1/9, even as the doc is scrolled to the end. 3. View is set to Normal. 4. I've never had to adjust the views previously and never have used print layout, except when measuring a letter of my own for print pages. But thanks for the note. Your OS is irrelevant here. Your description of the previous page view ("The
doc looked like a doc, margins, and all") sounds like Print Layout view, not Normal view, which does not show margins. Regardless of view, page numbers never advance as you scroll until you move the insertion point. As you scroll down through a document (using the slider on the scroll bar or clicking below it) the IP stays where you left it. If you press the spacebar, you will insert a space back on page 1 or wherever you were. If you use the browse arrows instead, you actually advance the IP to a new page. -- Suzanne S. creating a Word document; I'm uploading a Word doc from my hard drive, and it DOES NOT OPEN IN WORD THE WAY IT WAS SAVED; it WAS NOT SAVED IN PRINT VIEW; IT DISPLAYS IN PRINT VIEW, but thanks anyway. I guess I'm not making myself clear. Nowhere did I say anything about
creating a document. Your description of the view in which it was saved ("The doc looked like a doc, margins, and all") sounded like Print Layout view. If the document was in fact saved in Normal view, then it will open in Normal view unless there is some macro present to force Print Layout view. If this were Word 2003, I'd think you might be opening in Reading Layout view, but that's a horse of a different color. It is also possible to open a document, change the view, and "save" it, but the document is not actually saved in that (different) view unless you have made some other change in the document. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm If you like, send me one of the documents that you say is saved in Normal view but opening in Print Layout view, and I will tell you what view it opens in on my machine. -- Suzanne S. Gotta hand it to you for hanging in there. Yes, all of the docs I've made in the past will NOT open on my Word in the format in which they were saved. If you're email is as stated in the profile, I'll send you one. This is "daewon.rev," and it DOES NOT open the way I saved it. See if it opens in print view on yours. I'll send via my OE. "Suzanne S.
