Default Split Windows on Startup

I recently opened a word file that I received by email that had as split
window with the pages of the document in the left handed vertical pane and
the document in the right pane. I was able to remove the split window by
clicking on Remove Split under the Window command. But, everytime I open up
Word or a Word Document the split pane appears. I tried just about everthing
including saving a new normal.dot document but the two panes always show up
on startup. How can I stop this from happening? thanks

It sounds like thumbnail view is turned on. Click View and then click
Thumbnails to toggle it off.
