Default New and original text boxes automatically link

When I copy a text box and the new and original are linked together. At
least I think there linked. I tried to use the text box tool bar to delete
the link but no matter which box I select I don't get the break link choice.
So maybe their not linked which means I don't have a clue what is happening.
I've used the document many time before today and it worked fine.

This is likely to be a case of document corruption. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/CorruptDoc.htm.
