thanks mate, (we're all from down under now); it was the magic reference to
"menu bar" that got me there. I had just had a run-in with the "insert" key,
so that's what I thought Sammy was refering to...dead end there. I remember
the good old days when programs came with manuals! imagine that! thanks again

G'Day Doug,

You're welcome!

The best reference I ever had for Word was a book that I think came
from Sams - 1400 pages for Word v2.

It came with a free Quick Reference - 120 Pages.

uhhh, "Sams"? 1400 pages!!!!! Now that's a bible. and 120 start up pages,
perfect. on the hand, this system, if slower, is a lot more international and
personal.

Hillary (Clinton), soon to be first female candidate for US presidency
(forgive me if it is common knowledge), among others, has observed correctly
it seems to me that, in addition to strong parenting, it takes a village to
raise a child; and so it is that, lacking manuals, especially the free kind,
it is the global village stepping in that saves Bill Gates, et al. so many
printing dollars. It constantly amazes me how useless the MS-anything Help
function is; I guess they save money here too. Uh oh, I'm venting again!
thanks again, doug

As seen in the Insert | Symbol dialog, it is Unicode glyph 00F7 or ASCII
character 247, so you can insert it using Alt+0247 (on the numeric keypad)
or, in Word 2002 or 2003, by typing 00F7 and pressing Alt+X.
