Default Copy a protected document

I have a protected word document (password unknown). By reading several
postings, it seems as though I should still be able to copy text from the
document to paste into a new doc. Copy and paste is gray, Ctrl+A doesn't
work, ect. Is there a way to copy protected text? Thanks.
