Default Page format code alway displayed on page

I have a document that is published annually now updated from Word 03 to Word
07. Apparently, the following is always displayed...but not in print preview:

{PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT} how do I hide this code or see the page layout in
the print preview format?

Press Alt+F9. It's a toggle -- each time you press it, it switches between
field codes and field results.
