Trapped in Open Office @ work

Default Open office Document won't open in MSO @ home as it has previousl

)Where I am working, a college campus, we "ONLY" use Open Office instead of
Microsoft Office on a majority of the faculty computers (those in
administration or those who have gotten special permission have "enough
licenses" to have both, Information Technology (IT) does--even donations,
personally it is political and this 'squeakly wheel' has been cut off from
using MSO.) I have had MAJOR problems, IT has visited my computer and made
changes at work. Now for some reason when I write a (OPEN OFFICE/Word)
document at work it will not open in Microsoft Office-2003-Word on my home
computer or laptop that broke yesterday at work. What needs to be done? The
OO/word documents come up gibberish with boxes and it says on the scroll that
it is Japanese or something. HELP!
