Word Options Freezes and Mouse won't select on Word only.
My mouse has stopped being able to select text in Word (2007). I can select
using arrow keys with shift. I tried to see if there was a problem in Word Options, but could not move out of the 'Popular' page. I can't find any reference to this elsewhere. The mouse works fine on all other programs (including Office and other programs). Does anyone know how to correct this? |

Word Options Freezes and Mouse won't select on Word only.
Hi Ben.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did as you suggested and all diagnostics were clear. There was one issue identified, though. I have now been able to click "Download a file periodically that helps determine system problems" by coming through PowerPoint's 'Privacy Options', so hopefully diagnostics will be able to find the problem in due course. Just for additional information, I checked for virus's and there were none detected. I also didn't mention that, since this problem began a few days ago, I have kept getting error messages something like " Word has stopped working... checking for solutions"... then it would restart, the problem would recur and the program would be closed down with a message that I would be notified if there was a solution". I have never come across anything like this. I would be interested in any thoughts you have. Otherwise, fingers crossed that the newly downloaded information will save the day. But, thank you again for your help. Gerard "Ben M. Thanks again, Ben, but no luck. I did as you suggested and the problem hasn't
gone away. I did an uninstall and reinstalled a few days ago and that didn't work. I thought your idea was better, but unfortunately, I am still stuck. Gerard "Ben M. You might try doing a System Restore (how depends upon your OS; Google
"Windows System Restore") back to a day before the problem started and see if that helps. -- -Ben- Ben M. Hi Ben.
Thank you so much for your help. I did the System Restore and all is well now. I really appreciate you taking the time. Gerard "Ben M. Word Options Freezes and Mouse won't select on Word only.
I think I have the same issue ---
On one of my other PCs (WinXP Pro, Office 2007) I created a word document (docx - compatibility mode). When I open the document (docx - compatibility mode) on my Vista Ultimate system (Office 2007) I cannot select any of the text with my cursor. If I go back to the WinXP system all seems to function normally. On my Vista system I also noticed that I cannot click in the vertical scroll bar area. I also noticed that I can use the arrow keys to move around in the document. When I open a PowerPoint or Excel file I don't have this cursor issue. When I close Word I'm informed that it has stopped working. I just attempted to create a new test document on the Vista system and I see the same issues as with the other document. Therefore I don't think it has anything to do with the document. I was going to attempt a repair, as you can do in 2003, but I could not find the darn option. OK now I found it, MS has renamed the darn function and put it in a different place (thank you MS for making word so much better, ops do I sound bitter, sorry). When I open the options window I cannot use the mouse or arrow keys to select Resources or anything in the Nav pane but I can use the mouse in the right-half of the window. I'm in the process of moving to the Vista system and I'm not sure just when the word issue appeared but originally all was OK. After reading the post from Ben I tried 1) In Microsoft Windows, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Diagnostics. This did not find any issues and took me to the MS website for more help - nothing suggested was of any help 2) go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, find your Microsoft Office install on there and perform a repair installation. I'm running Vista (@#%@$@#%) thus it is different for me Control Panel Program and Features select MS Office Enterprise 2007 Change and then select Repair. This process failed - something to do with the bootstrap(?) I'm going to run again and see what the darn message was. The second attempt ran without issue, now I need to reboot my system. OK after reboot I tested and there is no change 3) the other suggested action is to restore to an earlier point. I've reviewed my restore options and I can go back about 10 days and will give this a try. OK this attempt did NOT provide a solution. Any other ideas? |

Word Options Freezes and Mouse won't select on Word only.
I don't see my previous post but in another newsgroup I made a similar post
and the solution that was suggested and worked for me is as follows: Sounds like a corrupted Word DataKey. Run Regedit, navigate down to DATA and delete it. When Word is restarted, it will automatically recreate the keys. Word DataKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\versio n number\Word\Data After I deleted the "Data" key (BTW for office 2007 the version is 12), I opened Xplorer2 (Windows Explorer replacement), found a word file, double-clicked on it and I could use my mouse as expected. Everything now seems normal. |

When in Word, I am only able to navigate using my arrow keys, but not my mouse. I've tried the "repair" suggestion above, but that hasn't helped. I don't think I understand the Regedit suggestion. I went there, but couldn't find "Data". Does anyone have a suggestion to fix this problem with the mouse? It is working in all my other office programs. |

I am running Office2007 Home and Student on a Vista machine. Where do I
initiate the Regedit and how do I get to that place? What are all the steps to complete this? Also, I have never heard of Xplorer2. How do I find that? Word Options Freezes and Mouse won't select on Word only.
The solution posted in the thread "Can't use mouse to select text in Word" is
the same as this one, but it offers a more detailed instruction. Here it is (and it worked for me): Just go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791/en-us?spid=11377 -----will guide you through a couple of EASY steps, only takes 2 minutes and it fixed the problem. Wahoo! The instructions in the link above a To resolve this problem, delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\W ord\Data registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Exit all Office programs. 2. Click Start button 3. type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\W ord\Data 5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes. 6. Exit Registry Editor. 7. Restart Word.
